“Utu” means reciprocity, for both good or bad. This hammer, a tool that has spent many years violently forcing others to do her will, and confident her future was assured because a hammer is always useful, met her untimely end in the same manner.

Human examples include Benito Mussolini, Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu, Colonel Gaddafi...and any number of local gang members who sow the wind and reap the whirlwind. Maybe you know some hammers in your life, or maybe you are a hammer. Then take note that what comes around goes around.

That’s my exegesis and interpretation. Or, if you are so inclined, our bloody taxes being used to no doubt fund some lefty to produce an obscure piece of modern “art”. Joking aside, I like it. The sight of a hammer riddled with nails, rendering it useless is a very unusual, indeed ironic image.
