I am one of the hundreds of thousands of parents who reluctantly acquiesced to the request that my children be given the meningococcal vaccine. It now emerges that the immunity is reasonably shortlived.
Here is the official advice referred to in today's media articles;
Data from the MeNZB™ trials have shown that the detectable duration of immunity post-vaccination is measured in months rather than years.
1/ How many parents would have complied if they had known the immunity was short-lived?
2/ How are the parents of those children who experienced bad reactions to the vaccine now feeling?
3/ Was the $200 million campaign considered a one-off?
4/ Where has this site - www.immunise.moh.govt.nz - gone?
5/ How does one weigh up the risks against benefits when the real benefit is not known?
6/ Do any other parents out there recall being told that the vaccine was short-lived?
7/ How does the Ministry of Health propose to ensure all parents remain vigilant because their children may not have functional immunity? Another multi-million dollar information campaign?
Update; Today's NZ Herald editorial sums up the situation well.

As you are all for personal responsibility, I find it strange that you complain.
On the basis of the same information, I opted out.
No government official forced me to opt-in, no pressure whatsoever was put on me. Isn't this simply the result that shit can happen if you're personally responsible?
I find it strange that you are indifferent.
Nobody was forced to vaccinate their child. But taxpayers were forced to fund what is now looking like a campaign based on misinformation. And judging by the report in today's Herald it may have been that the information was deliberately suppressed. "Shit can happen". We don't know the extent of it yet. But "shit" and "state" seem too often to go hand in hand.
Correct, Lindsay.
The core issue here is the notion - blindly accepted by MSM in particular - that "vaccination" is synonymous with "immunisation".
It is not. The former is a process, the latter an outcome.
Little use asking your local GP for an opinion, either. You will invariably receive the mantra-response:
"The benefits far outweigh the risks". End of 'discussion'.
From Dr Guy Lanctot, MD:
"Vaccination is expensive and represents a cost of one billion dollars annually. It therefore benefits the industry; most notably, the multinational manufacturers. One sells the vaccines. The other then provides the arsenal of medications to respond to the numerous complications that follow. Their profits increase while our expenses go through the roof. To the point where we have simply had it up to here and are ready to accept the unacceptable, such as socialised medicine in the US, for example."
And earthier, from Bernard Shaw:
"As well consult a butcher on the value of vegetarianism as a doctor on the worth of vaccination."
I have a lot of information, but I'll stop there. I'm no luddite; far from it; but gee, I have genuine doubts about vaccination.
I am really angry about this.
As a first-time mother with a new infant I was in a vulnerable position at the time and the fear-mongering about the "epidemic" most certainly DID put pressure on me.
I read the information very carefully but only found out afterwards that the vaccine was only for MenB and you could still get the other strains. And now even that so-called protection will have worn off.
It's an outrageous piece of shoddy work and may seriously damage vaccination programs. I'm certainly thinking twice about bothering with the rest of the schedule.
Karen, you are justified in being angry. The issue of to vaccinate or not is a real case of "damned if you do, damned if you don't".
There is real pressure to vaccinate children. As a libertarian, there is no way in heck I advocate compulsion or banning, but I do advise some serious homework. Then, at least, you can be comfortable with your choice.
A good pointer is to discard the rantings of extremists & concentrate on measured articles.
What I found ironic was that on the very day this report on the MV campaign was released, a Ministry of Health spokesman was on the radio urging those concerned to utilise the latest vaccine for cervical cancer, with identical rhetoric to that of the MV ...
It's long bemused me that humans can naturally acquire & get over tetanus numerous times, which means getting the illness doesn't provide immunity.
So why the need then for a vaccination?
Lindsay, re point 5, I take a different view:
How can one weigh up the benefits when the risks (plural) are not known?
Karen - don't ever trust the government again. Take Sus's advise - do your homework and decide on your own results. I read a lot about it at the time. My daughter (12) was lined up for the jab, I took all the information I found , printed it and took it to her mother (we are separated)and made my opinion clear - do not get her jabbed. The scaremongering is typical of the bastards - that's all they are....in the pockets of big pharma.
