Dependency growing on all fronts

In the past ten weeks the number on the DPB has increased by 2,240 from 104,400 to 106,640.

At this rate, within the year, the DPB will easily exceed its highest ever total of 113,329 in 1998.

The Sickness and Invalid's benefits have both increased also.

Naturally the largest increase is on the Unemployment Benefit which is up 8,296 from 50,855 to 59,151.

The reason we need to be very concerned about the DPB, SB and IB is those benefits are harder to get people off. Dole numbers will drop as the economy improves. We saw that happen under Labour. But there is absolutely no guarantee of that happening with the other benefits.

National needs to start acting on its campaign promises. So far they have done nothing about the constant upward trend of sickness and invalid benefits despite claiming they would and they have done nothing about work-testing the DPB.

(This post is not to be read as a criticism of people who are genuinely incapacitated. That should go without saying but apparently doesn't.)

Two months ago My next door neighbour was assaulted by an irate husband after being found in a compromising circumstance with the mans wife.

Today my neighbour is on a sickness benefit suffering from "Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome" as a result of the assault.

He has never had it so good. He now has time to engage in all the activities he enjoyed before, without having to go to work.

I called him a wimp and he replied "As long as the doctor writes the medical certificate declaring him unfit for work, who am i to criticize?"

Dirk.

I am aware of a couple who got together. Both had their own kids and both want to stay together. BUT, Both lost their work and struggled using their savings up. Insufficient help forthcoming so have separated reluctantly because as individuals they were given more assistance.
Happened last time work was scarce and will continue to happen.

Personally can't blame them.

Do they have priviate insurance? No?

Then they are taking money from MY KIDS because they are too lazy to work.

no mercy. and especially no money.

Once again: the entire benefit system in NZ can be turned off by an order-in-council in about 24 hours.

It's about time that happened!

I cant understand why people concern themselves with other peoples personal business except that their own lives must be very boring.
Can anyone prove how their own lives would be miraculously better if there were no beneficiaries ??
