Making car insurance available is 'sending out the wrong' message, it is fear-mongering and leading people to believe they might have an accident when in fact the chances are very small. After all there are over 4 million vehicles on the road in New Zealand but only around 40,000 crashes occur. A 1 percent chance.
Does anyone agree with that? These two would have to given their statements regarding insuring unborn babies.
New Zealand College of Midwives chief executive Karen Guilliand said the college would be "really concerned" to see the policy introduced in New Zealand.
She agreed with the response of New South Wales Midwives Association secretary Hannah Dahlen, that ING was marketing fear to expectant mothers.
"It is making women think about the terrible things that can happen, when the reality is there are very few mothers who suffer from complications during pregnancy," Dr Dahlen said.
Very few but more than 1 percent. Combine still births,neo-natal and post neo-natal deaths and the percentage in 2004 was 1.4
Stupid women.

The real fear, of course, is insuring someone these people claim is not a "person"
in fact, someone these people are willing to kill..
An insurance company that insured against complications that occured during pregnancy and childbirth would no doubt keep detailed records about the nature and causes of such claims. This would draw attention to the role that midwives have in the birth process. Maybe midwives have a reason to oppose insurance companies that wish to provide insurance cover against complications in pregnancy and childbirth.
Anon, So what about life insurance? That can be horribly manipulated but it remains a legitimate form of insurance.
Mark, I think there is more than a grain of truth in your speculation.
Lindsay I would suspect that Mark is not speculating and that there is a very large grain of truth. Ask the HDC.
what about life insurance
You miss my point. Life insurance insures something that if you murder it you go to jail. Some the state (Helen) considers worthwhile.
But insurance for the pre-born - well if you want your fetus killed you just go to a chemist. And yet - here we find that a fetus - although not a human being, is still an insurable life.
interesting precedent.
can of worms.
Interestingly, they're thinking of making car insurance (3rd party) compulsory.
It's so odvious I'm amazed that a) it hasn't been done years ago and b) so many people are up in arms - my wife being one :)
mawm and lindsay.
Given the level of public concern re obstetrics, and also professional concern, how about an inquiry on the level of the cartwright scale?
re midwives blindly following a discredited and dangerous "protocol" based on personal and political expediency.

21st century caremof mother and child.
I guess the stats would be scandalous
Just off the top of my head I did do a comparison of still birth rates for my own interest and NZ wasn't remarkable but it is higher than the US and lower than Australia and UK. However the definition of still birth varies which would affect statistics.
