Mallard makes $296,007 a year. Almost double what was paid to the individual he slandered.
That's what stuns me most about this revelation.
$158,000 seems a paltry pay-out for what the ex-parliamenatry employee endured.
Mallard has no mana going forward. He has no choice but to resign.
36 years is long enough. Bow out gracefully.
Update: There is talk on NewstalkZB that the falsely accused staffer recieved nothing. So was the $158,000 just court costs? Clearly I am not savvy about these procedures.
Update 2: The Taxpayer's Union has launched a petition calling for Mallard to pay the taxpayer back

When you break a window it provides work to a glazier and that's production, that's a boost in GDP that may never have been.
But don't break windows, do what Trev did. If enough false allegations could be made, why just 3, that's a million dollars created. A great boost to our legal sector. More money for our lawyers and more jobs created as new graduates hurry to work in this expanding industry.
He's really saving us all, you know?
Mallard has no shame, he will not resign. Ne will have to be pushed out.
I have not had any time for him since I saw him on TV, at the forefront of a bunch of lycra-louts hammering on the bonnet of a car that had attracted their ire while they were detaining traffic after allegedly riding 4 abreast on some street in Wellington.
I have little time for any politician really, but to me he epitomises the very picture of a trougher sucking from the tax-payer funded cornucopia.
