For your ongoing reference, here are beneficiary numbers, released today, at change of government. The slow but consistent reduction continued:
This illustrates just one of many positive social and economic factors for National, ignored by voters and Winston Peters (who insists on talking up a looming crisis for which he cannot be held culpable.)

Lindsay ... perhaps you could do a rerun twelve months hence. I have no doubt the numbers will skyrocket with the abandonment of any attempt to enforce work obligations.
You could be right Veteran. I hesitate over predictions because the civil service lags govt change. Whatever 'culture' has been established under three National governments won't alter quickly. The economy might. And certainly the incentives (work versus dependence) will.
Australia, here I come. What a ridiculous outcome, and now we will have an unelected hard leftie govt, not endorsed by the majority view. When oh when is WP going to bow out and leave good little NZ in peace. I cry at the thought of the wonderful job National have done now being squandered!! Just don't want to know. As for the left, you'd think they won it fair and square, lol! Anything for power and endless baubles!
Most of all, Winston's arrogant speech was nothing short of bizarre and odd. Don't believe he actually believed in it himself. Winston First is the scourge of MMP, once again. Oh, tax and spend and a tidal wave of welfare. So very responsible...not.
Great idea Lindsay.
This is a great reference point, Lindsay. Good on you.
Another one about to emigrate, too. I'm 31, earn a good income in Auckland, but won't be able to afford a place with the inevitable high interest rates, cancelled tax cut, and certainly won't be eligible for one of Labour's 'free houses' which only parasitic breeders will be eligible for. Australia is looking good.
