The Welfare Working Group kicks off an exploratory (my word) forum today at Victoria University. So I'll be tied up for the next couple of days. The programme is here.
I leave you with a letter that appeared in yesterday's Hutt News. It's a response to Frank Macskasy's letter of last week, from someone with an entirely different perspective.

Good letter Max Aston.
Max Ashton does speak alot of sense but I think he would have a better reception if he was from Moera and not Pt Howard.
That said his views do need a larger forum as this is the best description of the dangers of too much welfare I have seen.

Ha! He doesn't get near it! The biggest danger is that welfare takes money and resources away from the productive and gives it to bludgers. It is crucial that we start from there - not with second or third order effects - because the only way to end welfare dependency is to end welfare
Hell: in most Euro countries all civil servants, teachers - even cops! - are taking 10%-15% pay cuts and welfare eligibility and payout levels are being slashed brutally. The UK is going to cut government spending by 10% in real terms between now and the end of the year!
Any and all discussions of welfare must start from the basic principle that it is immoral (which some people on the committee will disagree with I am sure, thanks to John-do-nothing-Key) but most important that it is utterly and completely unaffordable.
To continue with any welfare in the current environment, with NZ's net debt at 200% of GDP and rising fast, is criminally negligent
