prison vs work

In prison you spend the majority of your time in an 8'x10' cell. At work you spend most of your time in a 6'x8' cubicle.
In prison you get three meals a day. At work you only get a break for one meal and you have to pay for it.
In prison you get time off for good behavior. At work you get rewarded for good behavior with more work.
In prison a guard locks and unlocks all the doors for you. At work you must carry around a security card and unlock and open all the doors yourself.
In prison you can watch TV and play games. At work you get fired for watching TV and playing games.
In prison they allow your family and friends to visit. At work you cannot even speak to your family and friends.
In prison all expenses are paid by taxpayers with no work required. At work you get to pay all the expenses to go to work and then they deduct taxes from your salary to pay for prisoners.
In prison you spend most of your life looking through the bars from the inside wanting to get out. At work you spend your time wanting to get out and inside bars.
In prison you can join many programs which you can leave at any time. At work there are some programs you can never get out of.
In prison there are wardens who are often sadistic. At work there are managers.

Those are from the Adam Smith blog. I'm sure we can think of some more NZ examples, like...

In prison you can breastfeed. At work you can't.
In prison you get underfloor heating. At work you get legionnaires disease from the crappy air conditioning system.
In prison the gym is free. At work you have to pay a membership fee.
In prison a positive drug test means a longer sentence. At work a positive drug test means you are out on your ear.
In prison you can smoke. At work it is prohibited.

Got any more?

In prison you can get visited by prostitutes - at work you can't.
When you leave prison you get some money from the Govt for housing - when you leave work you only get a benefit after a stand down period.
In prison you can you use your cellphones to get drugs - at work you cant or your boss will fire you
In prison childcare will be free - outside you have to pay for it.
In prison all travel outside is free - others have to pay for it

Much the same can be said about school and prison. E.g. Prisoners are sentenced to a specific number of years in prison, children are required to spend a specific number of years attending school. Prisoners must obtain the permission of guards for any activity, children must obtain the permission of teachers for any activity. Prisoners are required to stay in their cells for a number of hours each day and allowed out for short periods for exercise, so too with school children. Escaping prison is an offence and legal authorities will seek to capture and return the prisoner, so too is being a truant. Bullying is common in prison and the guards seem unable/unwilling to prevent it, the same is true in schools. When prisoners leave prison they are often unable to cope with the real world. This is often the case with children when they leave school.
