Quick international comparison
Statistics NZ has just issued this handy table. NZ isn't top or bottom in any category except % population under 15 years old. Ours is highest (due to the Polynesian population):

Lindsay Mitchell has been researching and commenting on welfare since 2001. Interesting to note our GDP per capita is approximately half that of the USA, and we are only kept off the bottom of the table by China.
This highlights productivity as an issue for us Kiwi's and why so many are in low paid employment.
Without checking, in the 50s/60s NZ was near or at the top of GDP per capita rankings.
