However I believe the first line of responsibility for making provision for welfare lies with individuals themselves. People could start organising welfare before they start a family - income protection insurance and a pension scheme. Or join a friendly society or other organisation which can provide support during times of unemployment or illness.<br /><br />The second line is family. Wouldn't you rather support members of your own family than a person you don't know at the other end of the country?<br /><br />The third line should be charity - money given freely and more efficiently distributed to the deserving, as opposed to state welfare which is a blunt and blind instrument.<br /><br />State-organised welfare causes so much harm that it should be abandoned. Neither National nor Labour are ready to accept this glaringly obvious fact, and continue to embrace the Marxist redistributionist attitude, to this country's detriment.Richard McGrathnoreply@blogger.com
