Forget "fair" and focus on the fiscal restraint

David Shearer says that Mondayisation of public holidays and longer Paid Parental Leave are "fair to families".

But these bills aren't fair to employers and most taxpayers. They are both an additional cost on the economy. And the timing is bloody awful.

Leaves me in no doubt that National was the better governing party to weather a protracted recession. That's not to say they couldn't do  better.

The passage of these bills would indicate that New Zealanders are no better than other head-in-the-sand Europeans.

The measure would be a vote catcher for Labour. The fact that it might be harmful to the economy is a bonus to Labour whilst in Opposition. Anything to make the National Government's task more difficult is a winning strategy.

This is the first time I've seen this blog, it's a good read.

This comment is non-partisan, about government as a whole.

Yes, welfarism has created a society of dependency and self-pity. The popularity contest that is politics, a symptom of democracy, is slowly killing every nation it infects like a cancer, both socially and economically.

There seems to be total disregard for individual rights and liberties.

I'm worried about the future. Government continues to grow, taking on more and more responsibilities for us. As the power of government continues to grow, it becomes nothing but a big auction-house, serving the special interests.

Capitalism is blamed and demonised by the public and politicians for our current economic problems, resulting in further government intervention and regulation of the market. Socialism, the ultimate result of unrestricted democracy, is making its way into our politics and economy for the worse.

Nobody seems to have the political might anymore to swallow the good but bitter-tasting medicine, refusing to ameliorate the issues that plague our economy, the same issues that the Europeans are now forced to address.

The whole structure of our economy and politics is in need of reform. We need to head more towards the ideas of free market capitalism, where taxation and regulations are kept to a minimum. I wish one day for a New Zealand republic, where the individual is recognised and protected from the tyranny of democracy and government.

Anyway, keep up the great work. Another great blog that I'll visit regularly now.
